What’s Happening to the Music in Nashville

Being down in Nashville and seeing all the music going on… well let’s put it this way, the first thing everyone says to me is ” Oh you must like country music, that’s what Nashville is known for”.

My response is “No Sh**”… no I wish it was, but sometimes people  are really rude when they talk to me about it. Majority of the time I say yes it is but it’s rapidly changing.

And I’ll tell you how:

Everyday, a new artist from all genres of music are coming from LA to New York and are moving to Nashville. Why? It’s not as cut throat as the other cities are, people will actually listen to your story and give you advice. Also, it’s 10x cheaper to live here in Nashville then it is in any other big music city. The other big thing, it’s easy to travel from. To get to NY, you have to take a train, deal with traffic and worst deal with all those people. To get to LA, you have to go through the mountains if you are driving or flying for that matter, deal with traffic and worst deal with the people. Sure to get to Nashville from the east, you have the mountain range, but to get north or south piece of cake. Because it’s in the middle of the country, you don’t have to worry about all that traffic and most importantly you don’t have to deal with people being mean to you. Like really mean… you know what I mean.

Also, bands/artists such as Kesha, Kings of Leon, Jack White, Justin Timberlake are moving/ live in Nashville. Why? Because Nashville is the next up coming city. Just you watch world.

While country music will always exist in Nashville, and believe me, I feel it always will, Music Row is a historic  music part of town that is getting bought out by real estate corporate investors.  And due to this corporate money coming into Music Row, people are dipping out fast. RCA Studios was almost completely bought out, the houses are being bought out and being turned into God knows what. Why? Because Music Row is where country music “started” and now corporate wants to turn it into a tourist trap.

My point: Nashville is NOT just country music anymore. It’s more than that, Nashville is about the music and will hopefully always be about the music.

Everything Comes With a Price

First off, I would like to apologize, it’s been so long since I wrote on my blog. I think this is the longest I’ve gone without writing. So for those of you who truly like to read my blog, I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy trying to get myself together here in Nashville.

Now with that being said, here are some insights about the industry down in Nashville:

People want to help you, however sometimes it comes with a price. If they know they aren’t going to get anything in return, more than likely, they won’t put you on their priority list. Also, there’s a huge gender factor down here. If a girl passes my name off to another friend, I’m a good person. If a guy passes my name off to another friend… I’m sleeping with him. It’s a stupid double standard, but it exist.

While Nashville is a small town and everyone knows everyone, it’s still very hard and competitive to get into the work place here. Yes, people are moving here like it’s going out of style and businesses are booming, but again you need to know the right people. Also, I’m sick and tired of being told I’m over qualified, seriously, just pay my less and hire me already.

Most importantly, it’s not easy. Not at all. It’s hard being away from family, it’s hard being away from the things you know, it’s hard just to establish yourself in a new city. But at the end of the day, I know it will be worth it. It has to be worth it. I will make it worth it.

Production In Music

I don’t know why I didn’t write about this a long time ago. But everyone that I know always ask me “what do you do in music?”. I tell them, “I work in production.”… (silence)… (Them)”What does that mean?”

It means I help put on the show. Whether that’s being a runner, a production assistant, a stage manager… it pretty much means if my team and I weren’t there, there wouldn’t be a show.

Then people ask me, “Well that means all you have to do is work during the show, right?”… “Not necessarily, I work ahead of time, you would be surprised how much work goes into putting a huge festival or concert together.” (Them)” Oh, I didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool.”

So the next time you decide to go to a show and complain that the band is  five minutes late, know that there is a crew working behind the scenes fixing the problem to get the band out there. In a nutshell: There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes of a show.

Local Bands

I love going to shows. I honestly could care less if I knew every song off the album or if I’ve never heard of them.

Which is why I love supporting local bands. Sure, some of them are just cover bands, but at least they like to jam. My favorite local band right now is The Listening Party.

Yes, they are close friends of mine, but they actually have some original music that is pretty damn good. And no matter what kind of music you like, I think any music guru will like them because their music is pop rock/ a bit of alternative edge kick to it.

And lucky them, I got them a gig this year at one of my jobs. Needless to say, I felt good doing them a service, but at the same time, they deserved it. Because not every local band gets recognized and it’s about time they do.Besides, if you are going to make it big, it all starts with the local fan support.

I have been so bad when it comes to keeping up with my blog. It’s amazing when you lose a full time gig how much time you fill it up with!

As y’all know, SXSW changed my life, in many positive ways. It’s made me realize what I really want out of life but also look at life as it’s more of opportunities rather than doubts.

With that being said, I had my plans set on Austin. But due to recent events in my life and with more jobs in Nashville, it looks like as of now, I’m moving to Nashville.

Please don’t call me wish washy. I love both cities and will end up living in both at some point in my life. But as of now, Nashville looks like it’s calling my name.

Starting from the Bottom

A lot of people say to me, “You know you have a long haul ahead of you”. Meaning I’m going to have to work my butt off to get to where I want to be. And I tell them… “Yeah, so what? At least my life will be worth of value and accomplishment when I get there versus living a life that has a 9 to 5 job.”

It’s like anything in life, you have to start from the very bottom. Work your networks, your skills and yourself to get to where you want to be. If you want it bad enough, you will get there.

Here’s something for everyone reading this post: Follow your dream. Do what you want to do, and eventually you’ll be where you want to be.

“I’ll Rock You Like the Sea”

As time goes on, you mature in many ways. Me for example, I’ve not only matured with my attitude and the way I see the world, but my taste in food and most importantly music. Yes, my first CD was the Offspring, thanks to my dad. But like most 7-year-old girls, I was heavily influenced by my friends. Which is why my second CD was the Spice Girls…

But luckily for me, I was surrounded by musicians and people with open minds, and from them, I learned to appreciate all types of music. Let me make that clear, I don’t like all kinds of music, I appreciate it, because at the end of the day, they are making millions of dollars doing what they love, and I am not.

I had a friend a couple of years ago introduce me to an artist named ZZ Ward. And my friend was flabbergasted by the fact I had no idea who she was. So like anyone, I gave her a listen and now I can’t stop listening to her either! I’ve literally turned into my friend who can’t stop talking about her. With her jazzy rhythms and catchy lyrics, she’s an artist for anyone who appreciates good music.

…I should also mention, I consider ZZ Ward a peek at my mature taste in music!

Harder Than It Seems

I hate it when people say to me ” Oh my God, you worked with this such and such bad, I’m so jealous of your life…”. Yeah, there’s perks to working in the entertainment industry, but in reality, you have to fight for it everyday because everyone wants to do it. You have to wake up every morning wanting it, because if you don’t, there’s jo shmo walking in taking the next gig.

My point is, if I continue this route in my life, I will not have a normal life. I will be working hours around the clock on top of the fact that it won’t be “just a job”, it will be my life.So think about that before you say ” Oh my God I’m jealous” to me.

Time and Dedication

First and for most. Thank you to all who follow and read my blog. I don’t have many followers, but it is nice to know someone cares about my writing. Eventually, in my career, I hope to one day write reviews or articles about music/musicians that actually matter.

With that being said, yes I have my passions and my ambitions in life, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to throw people under the bus just to get there. I’ll work hard every single day to prove to the world but most importantly to myself, that I am good enough.
*Side note* This little rant came from something that happened this past week, and I made a vow to myself to never become such a person.

I guess I won’t talk about a band this week, I’ll talk about one of the most inspiring artists, I feel, that has changed music forever. I grew up listening to Eric Clapton, and believe me, I was not a fan. But as I got older, and my parents made me listen to opera, classic rock music, church music, I started to realize the patterns in all genres. There’s passion behind their music. Which is why, I, to this day will say, Eric Clapton is in my top five favorite musicians of all time. Mainly because his artistic ability on the guitar is just phenomenal. Because true musicians know, they don’t have “natural” ability. Although, I hate those who practice way less than most and still kill it. But it takes a lot of time and dedication to become good at something. The way he plays guitar, you can tell, a lot of time and dedication was put into his playing.

I think that’s what life should be about. Dedication to something you’re passionate about. Whether it’s sports, accounting, science, research, music, you should want to wake up every morning doing what you love.
