“Would You Take The Time To Catch Me If I Fall”

A lot of people ask me about my background and why I’m in the music industry in the first place. Yes, I wanted this life and I worked really hard for it. But it also runs in my family.

My mom got a job out in New York working for a record label and my dad was well on his way to get a full ride at Juilliard.

Well both of their lives took a different turn, so did mine as well. When I was applying to colleges, I was dead set on becoming a doctor. I wanted to help people in a way that made them feel better. But my life took a different turn and I ended up changing my mind and dropped out of the college of sciences.

Sitting in class and wondering what the f*** I was going to do with my life became very daunting. I had so much on mind and trying to get my life together was a hot mess.

I tell everyone that I wish I would have went to college out of state, but what I’m very happy about my education is they always told me my minor should be my passion in life. And that’s how I ended up with a degree in public relations and music. I’m good at music and I understand music. But I also figured out I’m a pretty good writer.

My Point: I’m helping people in a different way, maybe they have no idea that I am, but I’m putting together experiences that people will never forget. And if life has taught me anything, experiences are priceless.

“I Haven’t Slept A Wink”

I’m so tired, I have no idea sometimes what I am doing. I forget what day of the week it is, I forget to shower sometimes, there was one day I was so tired I forgot to eat.

Why you ask, I’m putting in about 60 to 70 hours per week. This past week I put in about 80 hours. I’m pretty exhausted, but I think it’s getting me somewhere.

So, what have I been doing?

I was a PA for my friend Kyle Olson for a new reality show he’s working on. I don’t know much about TV, but it was a  good experience for me. Just working on set and understanding how the TV world  works puts me one step up. Thanks Kyle for the experience!

My recent PA gig was for the NAA conference with music performances in between. This gig was more of a business setting, but it was really good experience. I got more hands on experience with stage/sound/lighting concepts.

My Point: I’m working really hard in getting my career going, so much I’m almost pushing myself too hard. But I’m doing it to give my family and myself a better life. A life that I can enjoy the things I want to and give happiness to those in my life.

Grammys

Most of the time, I’m 100% behind the Grammys. I think it’s a great award for any producer, songwriter, musician, artist to receive.

This year, I thought was kind of a let down. In more ways than one.

I think the best way to put it, it wasn’t exciting. It was pretty predictable but I just thought it wasn’t memorable. Maybe I am being harsh, I’m not trying to be. I also think, there should have been other artists in nominated in certain categories, but again, who am I to judge. I’m just a blogger from Wisconsin.

Bob Lefsetz has the best music blog, I’ve ever read. This past blog, he wrote about the Grammys and the best thing he said was,

I don’t know where to go from here. Kill the Walking Dead”.

Let’s be honest, I’ve saw more people post about Walking Dead on Facebook then about the Grammys. Twitter was all about the Grammys, but I think everyone was ready for Kayne to do something drastic this year. But seriously, if the Grammys are competing against the Walking Dead, I think more people would rather watch zombies.

My point: I really hope that the people that receive their Grammys really do earn it. Because at the end of the day, it’s an achievement that many people will never get the chance to have.

What is Love? Baby Don’t Hurt Me

As a music “guru”, I’ve talked a lot  about music and love, but I don’t know if I ever really got into why.

I think love is something everyone strives for in some sort of way.Your passion for life, for your dog, for your significant  other. Personally, I think it’s the only way to live life. You have to live for what you love.

I used to make fun of the idea of love, and what love meant. Especially falling in love with someone else. But as I get older, I’m slowly starting to understand that most people live for, falling in love.

I fell for someone so hard that every time I see him, I feel like I need to puke and punch him at the same time. He really hurt me. And obviously it didn’t work out.

And writing my own songs and music, I understand now how much falling in love impacted my life. I lost trust, I lost faith but mostly I almost lost who I was as a person. And because of it, I can understand why so many people write about love.

But looking back now, I’m glad it happened. Because I learned and grew into the person I am today.

It Just Keeps Getting Better

I was told in college, that the working world would be tough. That the best years of your life would be in high school and college? My question is why? I had an amazing time in Australia when I studied abroad, but seriously, I had no money to do anything. I felt like I had paper after paper to write. When I graduated I panicked. I had no idea what the hell I wanted to do.

Thanks to my awesome professor, who lead me to one of my first mentors, I landed my third internship working at Summerfest. The place that changed my mind about work and what work meant to me.

Since I graduated, I’ve met a lot of amazing people, been to some pretty awesome places, and experienced some of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced. So yes, I’ve been having fun, listening/ working to/with some pretty awesome music and trying to make a living.

My point: I’ve come really far in my life and I’m sure you have as well. Make sure you take a step back and remember when life sucks, it’s going to get better.

Save the Drama for Your Mama!

I’m not one for conflict, I’ve never liked it. Mostly because I wish people would just get along.

One time, I was so mad at my friend, I made her listen to New Found Glory because I couldn’t talk to her because I literally just didn’t want to fight. And I told her ” this is how I feel about you, right now!”… I think it was ‘All Downhill From Here’. Lame I know!

So I started to write music because writing music about mean people is like writing about my ex-boyfriends… I’m going to stop right there, I’m started to sound like Taylor Swift.

Now that I think about it, I believe  90% is about about love or heartbreak, the other 2% is about being mad at someone. The other 8% is about sex and drugs. So I guess it makes sense.

My point: I’m getting much better at working with people that don’t like me.

Reasons: I don’t think I have that many “haters” in the first place, but also, if you kill someone with kindness, it really does make your life so much easier. So just be nice to people!

Or you can put your headphones in and pretend you are dating Ryan Reynolds…

The Difference between Brew City and Music City

I have been in Nashville for five months and of course being a northern, I noticed the differences between the two cities.

Politics: I never really took into consideration the “democratic” and “republican” states idea… until I moved to Nashville. Milwaukee is very much a liberal city when it comes to relationships, jobs, drinking and every day life. Nashville is “liberal” for being a city in the south, but there are certain ideologies that make Nashville conservative… especially drinking. I still believe Milwaukee is the best town for that.

Weather: Enough said… I’m not freezing my butt off down  in Nashville.

Motivation: After the recession, I noticed the job market in Milwaukee struggled when I got out of college. To this day it still struggles, and there aren’t many jobs there. I just feel there ‘s not a lot of motivation in Milwaukee to fight what Milwaukee use to be. Nashville people are wanting change and are willing to make a change. I feel that fight has died in Milwaukee. I’m hoping that will change.

To My Grandma

So what has happened to me in the past month.

I have gone home for a wedding, gone home for Thanksgiving, worked over 7o hours per week for the last two months, and now I’m going home for Christmas… and yet, I still haven’t landed the gig that I’ve been looking for.

But I guess that has been put on hold for bit because my grandmother passed away on my birthday. And I honestly don’t care that it was on my birthday, I’m more upset with myself that I didn’t give her the proper goodbye. Had I known,  the last time I was going to see her was in the hospital, I would have told her how special she is and how much she means to me. I probably wrote her a song had I known she wasn’t going to make it.

So this blog post is dedicated to my amazing grandmother.Who has taught me to be a strong, independent woman and to go after my dreams. Because of her passing, I’m going to to work as hard as I can to make sure I make her proud.

I love you grandma, always have always will.

“Make It Work”

We’ve all heard the phrase “make it work”… mostly from Project Runway from Tim Gunn. But when you really think about it, it’s a very daunting thought. Because, how exactly do you “make it work”.

I can personally say working in the music and marketing industry, it starts with yourself, and I’m assuming it’s the same for other industries as well. Pretty much if you aren’t determined to do it, you will never get it done. It starts within you.

Next, it takes practice. Practice always makes perfect, and you can’t  be good at what you do unless you do it. Like playing guitar or working on your car, if you want to be the best at it, you have to do it all the time.

Lastly, after all the preparation of yourself, it’s about selling yourself. For a lot of people, this is probably the hardest part. Because if you don’t tell anyone that you are totally awesome, how is anyone going to know. You have to go out there and be awesome!

Facts of life if you want to make it.

Band Geek to Rockstar: Where’s the fine line?

One of the things I hated as a kid was juggling music and sports. It was very difficult and many times I had to choose one or the other. My varsity basketball coach told me if I missed a game for a concert that I would be benched for five games. Is that seriously necessary?

So I want you to think about this: Were you a band geek? Tell me, were you made of in high school? Or were you making fun of someone for being in music in high school or college? Or worst, did you quit music because it just wasn’t “cool” to be in anymore?

When I first started playing saxophone, my band teachers initially told me I couldn’t play because there were too many saxophone players. And my mom told my teachers, “I can guarantee she will be the only one playing by the time she is a senior.” 13 saxophone players and seven years later I was the only one still playing saxophone by my senior year in high school.  Because I never thought it was dumb or stupid, I didn’t care if people made fun of me and most importantly I thought it was cool to learn how to read/write/play music.

Now let’s fast forward five years, I have friends who call me and ask me how to get started playing instruments. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are interested, but where’s the fine line between being a band geek and being a rockstar? When do people start to realize that music is a very, very cool thing. I’m not sure if anyone has the answer to this but my point, don’t make fun of the band geeks, they just might be the next concert you are going to.
