“Sweat”

I had a really good conversation last night with one of my supervisors from Milwaukee. I was telling him about the interesting ride I’ve had this year with my career and he said, “Being a dick is not going to get you anywhere in this industry.”

While I know this statement is whole, heartedly true I can attest to that statement. Because I’ve lived it multiple times. Just in life in general: If you are a jerk to people, you are not going to get very far in life. Seriously though, nobody likes a Debbie Downer or someone who is plain rude.

I guess the reason why I’m writing this is that it is relieving and reassuring to hear from someone higher up in the industry, just because you are an asshole, doesn’t mean you are going to push your way to the front.

I’ve had some awful experiences with people just being plain mean to me this year. Nothing I can do about it besides take the high road. I hope one day they do too.

Chester Bennington

It is a tragedy not only in the music but in society. I’m talking about this thing called suicide.

We work ourselves to the bone trying to enjoy this “American Dream”. We try to date, but dating isn’t quite the same as it was back in the 90’s. We try to make everyone happy, but let’s be honest, there’s always someone you can’t impress. And it takes a toll on you.

Unfortunately, suicide happens a lot in American culture. When you get to the point where you mentally can’t stand to see daylight anymore; It’s a shame that people call suicide a “selfish act”.

I feel for everyone including the fans that adored Chester Bennington. Chester was not only extremely talented, but he was in a lot of pain. And you can hear it in the music. I heard it when I first heard “Numb” for the first time on the radio.

I hope everyone sees this as a learning process.  Whether they ask for help or not, it’s better to ask are you ok, because sometimes that’s all people need. And sometimes they need a little bit more, and that’s ok too.

“California Stars”

And I’m back in Milwaukee! Again! I feel like I’m here every two months ago.

Any who…

I’m happy to be at Summerfest again! This is my 6th year in production and this is also the 50th anniversary of the Milwaukee World Festival!

We have a great lineup from country to hip-hop to rock to pop. Just to name drop a few:

Dan + Shay, Girl Talk, Tegan&Sara, DNCE, Atmosphere, Frankie Ballard, Peter Frampton, Michelle Branch… there are 11 ground stages so there’s much more where that came from! For more information check out the website: http://www.summerfest.com

I think it’s a great line up and I think if you are in the 414 area code, you should definitely come along!

With that being said…

I love going to shows when I’m not working. Thanks to the radio station I used to work for, they hooked me up with tickets to go see Wilco.

Wilco had an amazing light show and a very dramatic backdrop. There were points during the show where all they did was jam. It was amazing! I highly recommend seeing them if you like a good rock show!

One Love Manchester

Whether you like it or not. We live in a pretty unsafe, untrusting world.

Can we potentially make the future brighter? I would like to say yes, but that change would not only involve a big community but a big world attitude change.

But we have to start somewhere right? I’m very happy Ariana Grande got up on stage and performed. She brought other people along too like Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell, Coldplay… Big influencers in the music community.

Big influencers in the world community such as world peace or social justice… not entirely sure about that. The fact of the matter is, these entertainers stood up for something that is much bigger than selling tickets.

I hope the world truly starts looking around at each other and realizing that these matters happen every day. Big and small. Dramatic and things that don’t get covered on social media. If we don’t stand together and stop it, it will continue.

So thank you to all the security guards, production crew, the fans and the performers for coming together to create something for those who have lost something. Faith and trust.

Pray for Manchester

It is so sad. So, so sad what happened at Ariana Grande’s show this past week in Manchester. I don’t blame her for wanting to cancel her next couple of shows. If it was me, I would cancel all the shows.

There are a lot of people who work for  her. You not only put the artist at risk performing the show, but the crew and the fans. Unfortuately, the fans got the worst of it. 

As a concert goer, I can’t imagine what it was like to be at the show when the bomb went off. If I was working it, I wouldn’t know what to do either.With over 20 people dead and over 50 people injured, this is a tradegy.

I know the music industry is working hard to protect concert goers and the crew all around the world. But if this continues, soon it will not be safe for anyone to go to a show. We’ve had to many instances like this including Paris.

My thoughts are with those who not only lost loved ones but the concert goers that survived and lived to tell the tale. I hope the city of Manchester can make a recovery and  come together as a community to protect eachother.

Chris Cornell

As we have all heard, Chris Cornell passed away this past week. A tragic death for a legendary artist.

I will be the first to admit, I’m was not the biggest Soundgarden or Audioslave fan. But what Chris did for the music community, is not only worthy but amazing of how many people and lives he touched.

A true musician and artist he was. This is taken from his website on http://www.chriscornell.com/bio/:

Whether you agree with me or not, artists like Chris only come around every so often. Rest In Peace Chris. You will be sorely missed.

Go With It … And Your Strengths

You know how everyone is known for something? Everyone has their niche or the thing that they are really good at.

I’ve noticed over the years certain comments people say about me, professional and personally. Here are the few comments that have stuck with me:

“Most Improved”

“Honest and passionate”

“Hard worker and ambitious”

Honestly, I would say those are not the best comments in the world, not really, I would like to be told I’m a leader and have great ideas. But lately, I’m getting random calls and texts to work more events. Which means I’ve got to be pretty good at what I’m doing and what I’m known for.

Whether you are the musician or the person working backstage or in the office, you have to find what you are good at. And you play off of it because people will notice your strengths more than your weaknesses if you do.

I find that’s the biggest problem with artists these days. As an artist it not only has to suit you and what you stand for musically but the ones that have a following, the ones that really make it, their fans love it too. And if it is something unique and special that you have, people will notice.

You have something going on that’s good, go with it.

Take The Risk

So I technically worked my first food festival. I have to say, I like the food a lot, I like the people I worked with a lot,  so I enjoyed the festival a lot. It was a first year festival in Nashville. Yes, we should make improvements and we will. But for a first-year festival, I say it was a great success.

I’m a strong believer in people who want to be their own boss. People who want to do something different and unique with their lives. People who want to create a positive influence on society. So don’t hate on their dreams or anyone’s dreams for that matter. It takes time.

I strongly believe what these guys believed in this past weekend. Nashville Taco Fest will become something. Maybe not next year or the following year, but if there is enough love and hope to go around, things will certainly go a long way. It’s just a matter of taking the first risk of saying, “Yes, I want to do this!”

Hell, if Miley can take a risk from teeny bopper to pop star… I think you can too.

“Sweet Dreams”

I’ll tell you this right now, don’t expect to make a ton of money when you make it in the industry. If you hear of it, they are probably lying to you.

I’m not trying to pessimistic, but it’s true. You don’t enter this industry thinking you are going to make a lot of money. Because EVERYONE wants to work in the industry, so employers can offer you less than nothing to work in the industry.

Do I call bullsh*t, yes it is! But it’s the fact of life. Supply and demand my friends.

So if you enter this industry, I hope you have a lot of money to start or I hope you other forms of income.

A ton of us has side gigs. I work at the City Winery because I can. I have a lot of friends who bartend on the side. I even have a good friend who works full-time for a well-known country artist and she sells real estate on the side.

I’m trying to find other ways of income as we speak. I’m not hurting because I started my savings account about six years ago after I got stuck in New Zealand. But I’m always on the look out.

So just a heads up- “Sweet Dreams to You” if you think you’re going to make bank right away.

“I Never Want To Close My Eyes”

I’m the comeback queen myself and I root for a good comeback from anyone. I’m all about people taking a break, breaking down or whatever, and they come back strong. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen to all people (Sorry Lindsay).  But I’m very excited to see Michelle Branch is coming to one of my festivals this year!

Michelle Branch is known for her upbeat, pop sound; pretty much perfect for any romantic comedy. We all know her songs like “Everywhere” and “All You Wanted”, and if you don’t what the hell I’m talking about, just go to YouTube and look it up, I promise you know those songs unless you live under a rock.

I have to admit, her sound is a little more modern and a little more like something you would hear on the pop radio.

It’s not a bad thing, but I have to admit, I like her original music or the music she was known before. It was her sound.

I still want to see her show because I’m curious. But check out her new music video. You be the judge.
