Australia part 2: Melbourne and the Bush

Melbourne or (Mel-Bin) is a very cool city. It was the first city outside of Melbourne I visited when I first moved to Australia. Just a quick run down of Melbourne and why I think so many people love it!

It is a very hip, progressive city in the southeast corner of Oz. It’s very well known for its sports scene and has one of the best surfing places in the world. You might have heard of the movie “Point Break”… well that’s where it was filmed. All of the best surfers know that southeast Australia is where you go for some of the best surf in the world.

Melbourne also has a lot of history. It’s one of the wealthiest cities when it comes to bringing in money to Australia. It also has a lot of history when it comes to art, the history of the people, and why people live in Melbourne. I hate to compare cities but it’s very similar to Seattle. Great music scene, great sports scene, very mild climate, and great outdoors.

One of the reasons why Melbourne is so popular is because it’s not Sydney, like, in the states, we don’t want to move to New York or LA. We want to live in a city where we can afford to eat. Melbourne seems to be affordable, you can live within 15 minutes of the city and not have a ton of roommates. It also has a very mild climate, yes it can get cold, but it’s not super cold and never super warm either. A little bit more variation in weather than Seattle has.

Being on tour in Melbourne, was one of a kind experience. It was an awesome arena and a lot of people internationally performed and toured there. The fans are great in Melbourne, maybe it’s because it is known for its music scene but, damn they know how to rock. Also, there’s no such thing as bad food in Melbourne, at least not what I’ve experienced. There’s something very special about Melbourne, I highly recommend going to St. Kilda, CBD, and down to the Great Ocean Road.

Now, I know everyone loves Steve Erwin and Crocodile Dundee. But I’m going to tell you this right now, going to the bush, is not as great as people make it out to be. Think of bush as middle-of-nowhere America. You either have a lot of grass, a lot of rock, or a lot of dirt. It’s hard to live out there because there’s not much of an agriculture scene or water for that matter. That’s why 90% of the country lives on the coast.

I hate to break it to you, but when you live out in the middle of nowhere, everyone comes to the shows, because there’s nothing else to do out there. It’s really hard to tell if the fan base is legitimate or if people are bored and they have nothing else better to do. Either way, getting out to any part of the bush takes a long time, a lot of money, and a lot of energy. If you go out to the country side of Oz, be very prepared.

“Space Cowboy”

After a month of touring, I have a month off. But as awesome as it is to have time off, I need as much work as I possibly can get. Because I’m trying to work as much as I can.

#workworkwork

With that being said, I think there’s going to be a lot happening this year. There are a lot more tours going out, which means bigger line-up for festivals and arena shows. More artists are dropping albums this year which means more music to spread the love this year!

My prediction is this year, a lot of people in Nashville will be dropping a new album. Kacey Musgraves will be coming out with her new album in March and I am excited about it!

I’ve been a fan of her music since she started her career. She tells an old, country story with a modern-day message. She’s old meets new but there’s something profound about her music. It’s not the most upbeat but it is beautiful and catchy in its own way. I applaud her for sticking to her sound. She’s unique in the country world. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I genuinely love her music.

Worth It

Whether we are fighting for the next position, the next #1, the next move, the next dude, or the next war, we are constantly fighting for something.

The artist I was on tour with, she will more than likely hit #1 on the country charts within the next couple of weeks.

I was watching the ACMs tonight and I saw my friend playing drums for one of the bands on stage.

This stuff does not happen overnight, it takes a long time.

My friend who plays drums has been playing for the past ten years in Nashville.

The artist who I used to work with has been on stage since she was 16.

So whether you like them, hate them, or don’t care for them, I hope everyone can appreciate the dedication, the time, the money, the effort it takes to get there.

While life may be great and glamorous from the outside, on the inside it can be rough and dirty.

I want to take this time to say in my blog to say congrats to everyone who is making strides in their career. To those who are making leaps and bounds in life. And most importantly, staying true to who they are. You deserve it.

“Road Less Traveled”

I was thinking really hard… Wait a minute… When am I not thinking.

I was thinking about my career and where I want it to go. And to be completely honest, I’m not sure where I want it to go or where the hell I’m going. Hopefully it’s up! I just want to continue to make progress!

Because like everyone else in the world, I want to conquer it and do everything possible!
I truly believe in the artist I work for. She has a great voice and she really stands for all the good things in music.

Not only do I want to help her career, but I want to help her conquer of her dreams as well. Now tell me, how is it possible to do all things? Maybe it is, you just have to keep your focus and go for the gold!

If you are an early bird (Which I’m not), check out Lauren Alaina on the Today show tomorrow!

The Best Time of Year: Touring/Festival Season

I’m not going to lie, I get really excited for this time of year!

It’s not only the warmest time of year (Or getting there). It is also the time of year for baseball pants and outdoor concerts!

I really love what I do, and that’s why I fight for it every day. Which is why, I can proudly say, I’m finally going on tour. Well technically I already started but you get what I’m saying.

I’m working merch for an artist here in Nashville, I’ll be headed to Milwaukee and Des Moines this weekend. As excited as I am for this new opportunity, I’m also very nervous. Because most of my work is working with artists, agents, VIPs, not handling clothing.

Needless to say, I’m digging the gig so far. I like the band, the TM/PM, the bus driver, her manager; So far, everyone is down to earth and chill.

…But it’s the beginning of touring season, let’s see how this goes when November rolls around.

“I’m a 90’s baby, in my 80’s Mercedes”

It’s funny how we discover music. Sometimes it’s through the radio, other times it’s through social media like YouTube. Most of the time, I hear about new music through my good friends.

One of my friends is very good about posting on his Instagram about upcoming artists/damn good artists in general. Because let’s face it, we all don’t want good music to die.

Maren Morris has been around for a while, but now, is starting to get her career going. She recently opened three nights in Nashville for Chris Stapleton and she will be going out on tour with Keith Urban. Talk about making some progress, she’s on a roll!

But it’s mainly because, she’s down good ol’ country. You know, like what country is really about. Telling stories about life. Her tunes are catchy and the melody is something you can rock out to with the windows rolled down. And the best part is, she only has an EP out, which means, she doesn’t even have an album out. I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next!

Grammys 2016

I’m sure most of you watched the Grammys. And to say the least, I don’t think it was the most exciting event, but I have to admit. But I’am  really happy with the majority of the rockstars who actually won awards.

I don’t remember the whole list, but I’m extremely excited that Chris Stapleton and Kendrick Lamar won big! Good for those guys, they deserve it!

But just in case you live under a rock, here are the best and worst moments from 2016 Grammys in the link below.

I’m extremely happy about the nominees for the women’s country category. Especially Kacey Musgraves and Ashley Monroe.

I wrote a blog about Kacey a while back, but I absolutely love her music. She’s down to earth Texas country. She writes these stories that are relatable. It’s simple and beautiful.

Ashley is a quote a quote “newer artist”. She’s really not, she’s been around, but she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves. Her song “If love was Fair” is amazing. And as I’m writing, I’m listening to it on repeat. Check her out!

“Drunk People”

Dating is such a weird thing. Because it’s a grey area of “do I like you, or do I not like you”.  Will this work, what if it crashes and burns? But just remember, everyone is in the same boat. Everyone is an idiot when it comes to dating… right?

There should be more songs about awful dates, but I think it’s more fun to write about drunk people… right?

Ryan Hurd, an upcoming country artist in town is singing about it. As we speak. I’ve seen him perform a couple of times now.

Obviously being a guy, it’s much easier to write about drunk people and girls… right?

Yeah, I think so too. I’m lucky enough to know the guys that won’t the song with him. It’s catchy and it’s true! If there is one thing I can appreciate about the new upcoming country artist in Nashville. They are real, they write about real things and it’s meaningful. …Well I don’t know about drunk people, but the rest of country music!

Check it out!

“Courage, Please Don’t Fail Me Now”

Yay! According to WordPress, It’s my four year anniversay on WordPress… Now, where’s my hot toddy.

…Oh wait, I’m already drinking it. Today in Nashville, we are having a “snow day”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cold here… but there sure ain’t no snow! And that’s why I’m drinking a hot toddy.

But with that being said, there’s a lot of people that are in Nashville that are from the south. Which is not a bad thing, especially when it comes to music. A lot of southern musicians started singing in church. Heck, look at queen bee AKA Beyonce!

I’ve always had a thing with music from Texas. Especially Texas country. Don’t get me wrong, I like music from all different parts of the country, put Texas country really hits home with me.

I’m lucky to call my Ryan Beaver my friend. He was one of the first people I met here, and I try to go see him perform whenever I can. Because damn, it is some good Texas country.

Rolling Stone named him one of the top country artists to watch for, he’s also been on Sirius XM radio and has over 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

If you don’t believe me, take a listen for yourself.

“I’m a Wynette, Gretchen, Loretta Lynn I’ve learned from the best”

I decided to go out a couple of weekends ago to see Edens Edge at a local bar in my area.

First off, I should let you know, I bought their cd during the summer time for around $6. Yeah… now they are singing the national anthem at football games. It’s amazing how much one single hit can get a band so famous quickly. But get this, they toured with Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and more ,yet they are still playing at local bars. Eh, whatever, locals can listen to good music and not have to fork up an arm and a leg for it. I’m col with that. However, they are still a young band and they have a long way to go and still have much more to work on as a group.

I started listening to them because they remind me of a band I really like  called the JaneDear Girls. Naturally ,I streamed their music and low behold they had some pretty good music. Edens Edge I think can will become something more as long as they work on their best asset: harmony.

When I saw them live, I really liked the fact that they didn’t play to many cover songs. They only have 10 songs on their album so I was worried it was going to be nothing but cover songs. Surprise, surprise, they played all of their songs on the album. Of course know one knew them except me.

This is what I think of them live:

I love their harmonies. When they all sing together it’s pretty cool when they hit a chord at the same time. Could they work a little more on the performance on stage, sure, but every performer needs to work on that. However, for a band that is up and coming, I think they could use a different drummer. But otherwise they sounded great and not many pitch problems. Overall, good concert, I would see them again.
