Hunter Hayes, Neal McCoy, Brantley Gilbert and Toby Keith: Country Thunder Day 4

The last day of anything is always bitter sweet. You want something to be over, but once it’s over, it’s almost as if you never had it before. For example, I love my experience in Australia. But the last week of finals, I was extremely homesick. And all I wanted to do was go home. But as soon as I stepped on the airplane, I balled my eyes out because I never wanted to leave in the first  place. Literally, I was on the plane just crying and crying. I didn’t stop until about three hours until I reached the airport in LA. I cried more about leaving Australia then I ever did for a guy. Seriously, that is how much I miss that place every day.

Now I wouldn’t say that was my reaction to Country Thunder this year, because let’s face it, if I’m in the state, let alone the country, I will probably go to Country Thunder next year. End of story. However, whenever I’m having a good time, I never want it to end.  My last day was to accomplish as many things as possible since I wasn’t successful the first couple of days but, I failed again. I somewhat know one of the bands because I worked with them at Summerfest, so I helped them out instead. But here are my reviews from Country Thunder day 4.

Hunter Hayes: He is very young, which is not an excuse for any musician but I think as time goes on he will get better. He played at Summerfest, and I didn’t see his concert then, but I did see his crowd. It was sure packed, and of course he is the Justin Bieber heartthrob of country music, so go figure it was a packed crowd. From what I saw, he put on a good show. Nothing special, nothing bad just a good show.

Neal McCoy: I actually ran into him backstage… and I didn’t realize it was him! Big Oops… I didn’t say anything bad, but I was talking to him like I would any other person. After he went on stage, I was pretty distracted by everything else… go figure. But from what I heard, he played a lot of cover songs. Nothing against cover songs, they get the crowd going. But over half of his concert was cover songs, I personally think for as long as he has been around, he should play more of his songs.

Brantley Gilbert: He started making it big about 5  years ago, and boy has he made it bigger than ever. Yes I’m a fan of his , but I still have to make my reviews. Which is this, he puts on the good show, the crowd loves him, a lot of people like his music. He is early in his career where he can do a couple of cover songsbut at the same time play a lot of his songs off his albums. Because he is so well liked and people want to see him play, I just wish he would play longer. He has two albums out and I feel like an hour isn’t enough time to play for him because he actually plays his own music. He writes his own music which is why I’m a fan, it’s not just music, it’s his life story.

Toby Keith: I’ve never seen Toby Keith in concert. I’ve always wanted to, I made it a priority to go to Country Thunder to watch him play. Well he didn’t let me down that’s for sure when it comes to the show. He had lights, pyro, he had the works to put on the show. Of course he has the money to put on a show like that, but, he does it because he knows it will put on a good show ( correction, his tour manager and manager probably decided the show details. Besides the point, whoever thought of it, was awesome, it gets the crowd pumped). Again, my biggest compliant is that he is extremely famous, talented, the works, he should play songs that people never hear besides ” red solo cup” . ( Rumor has it that he was a little intoxicated his show, but I didn’t notice). Yes, hits are important to the success of  any musician , but that’s not what makes the story behind the musician, it’s the songs that nobody every listens to.

So there you have it, that’s what I thought about Country Thunder this year . Yes, I like country music, but music doesn’t discriminate, I love all types of music. So if you ever want to go to a concert with me, let’s go, I’m always up for an adventure!

Brantley Gilbert: My kind of Crazy

I love this song to death, because I hope one day, not today, but someday I’ll be someone’s kinda crazy.

Matt Stillwell, Casey James, Aaron Lewis, Easton Corbin and Blake Shelton: Day 3 Country Thuunder

So basically I missed a ton of concerts at Country Thunder on  Thursday and Friday, and I wanted to make up for it on Saturday. So I did my business. I mingled and watched 5 concerts that day. It seems like a lot of work, but I love doing it. Being in the concert setting watching it or  being backstage is just amazing to me. I love every minute of it.

The first guy I saw at 1:00pm was Matt Stillwell. I’ve never heard of him, I didn’t even know that name existed until I saw him at Country Thunder. To my surprise, he put a good show. It was very ” out in the sticks country” but he played all of his songs and he explained why he wrote each song. Even though he was playing to an audience of 50 people, he was still acting like he was the headlining act. Which to me says a lot about a musician, and with that being said, I would rather go see him than pay to see Big & Rich again. It wasn’t forced, it was natural, and it was good music. Not the best performance, but it was all instruments, a lot of heart and a lot of country.

Casey James came to Summerfest this year. I didn’t get to catch his concert at Summerfest which is why I made the effort to go see him. At first, I had very skeptical thoughts going to his concert. He was the runner up of American Idol and all that jazz, so I thought ” great, another one of these guys”. Boy was I wrong. This guy can WALLLLLLLLLE on his guitar. I was so impressed with his playing skills and the way he and his band played together. It was definitely not another “American Idol ” contestant. He is an artist, and a good one at that. I was very, very impressed.I would pay to see him again.
Aaron Lewis and Easton Corbin: I’m putting these two together because I have the same thoughts for both of them. They didn’t really put on  a show. I actually sat down when both of them were playing… I started to fall asleep. Not because it was bad, but it was so mellow, it really wasn’t a concert. I think they both have talent singing and playing wise but as a show, not so much.

Now Blake Shelton knows how to put on a show. He is one talented dude. I first heard his music when I was 11 or 12… I can’t remember. I heard ” Ol’ Red” on the radio and I’ve been hooked ever since…and now so is my mom because she loves ” The Voice”. But I’ve heard from many people that he is awesome to work with, and it shows in his performance. I was back stage for his concert and the way he interacts with his band is awesome. He’s just a natural at it. My biggest compliant again ( and this is for most headliners), he has so many albums, why can’t he just play more of his songs that people don’t ever hear. Otherwise, if you ever get to see him in concert, please go see him, he’s awesome live.

Overall, I think Saturday I was really happy with how most of the shows went. None of them were “bad”, but everyone could work on something to improve themselves as an artist .Everyone, in any industry, including myself, could improve on something everyday. 🙂

Matt Stillwell: Shine

Shelton: Ol’ Red

Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean: Country Thunder Day 2

Like I said in my last blog, I need to do a lot of reviews that I need to catch up on from Thunder. Lately, I’ve just been so distracted… oh wait that’s all the time.

Day 2 of Thunder was interesting to say the least, I saw cowboy sandals. For your information, if you wear them while I’m in your 5 foot bubble , I will not talk to you while you are in them.  You either wear flip flops or you wear cowboy boots, PICK ONE!

These things are ugly…

Again, I only made it to two concerts on the second day of thunder. I also saw both of these acts before. I saw Luke Bryan last year at Thunder and I saw Jason Aldean at Summerfest last year ( I wasn’t working Summerfest last year). So both concerts, I went to, and I enjoyed myself. I think both are very talented artists, but here is what I thought about Bryan and Aldean at Thunder this year.

Last year, Luke Bryan was just making it pretty big in the country scene. I gave him the benefit of the doubt of playing a lot of cover songs. This year, he did it again. According to the CMT website, he has 7 albums. SEVEN ! When you have been around for more than 6 years and you have that many albums, there isn’t  any excuse to play a half hour worth of cover songs. Luke Bryan has no excuse when there are plenty of songs for him to play of his own record.

However, I will give it to him, he is an excellent performer/entertainer. He gets the crowd going and keeps them going… well he kept me going because he started playing the piano during his concert ( I’m a huge sucker for a guy that can play piano). He is a very talented musician, I just wish he would show that off more in his concert by playing more of his songs.

Last year, Jason Aldean played for an hour at Summerfest. AN HOUR! Aldean has 4 albums out, as of 2012. Now, does that mean he played cover songs. No. But all he did, was play his hit singles. If you listen to his albums, he has some awesome songs off his records that didn’t make as hit singles such as   ” I ain’t ready to quit”. At Thunder, he didn’t play very long again ( maybe over an hour, not quite sure but it wasn’t long). He again, only played his singles. Aldean is good enough to play more songs than that. To me, that is such a let down, because he is so talented, I want to hear more of his music.

This song by Bryan is near and dear to my heart:

I just like this song, this is a crowd pleaser!

Music Makes My Heart Tick

I’m so sorry for not keeping up with my blog, I was truly busy working Summerfest for the past two weeks. But now, I have time to write. And let me just say I’m so excited to write this blog!

For those of you who don’t know, Summerfest is the world’s largest music festival. It runs 11 days with music playing from 12pm-12am ( there is a day break in between). Besides the point, bands from all over the world come to play at Summerfest from Europe to Australia.  Summerfest gives the Milwaukee community a good chance to listen to a variety of music  to see bands such as headlining bands you hear on the radio and emerging artists that are trying to make it into this industry. Let me just say, not many other music festival do that! So cool! I love anything that gives the underdogs a chance!

Before I worked at Summerfest, I was a die heart Summerfest goer. I went about 5-7 times a run. How can you not, with so many good bands coming to Milwaukee for 2 weeks … Milwaukee… Not many bands tour in Milwaukee anymore. So for over 100 bands to come and play in Milwaukee, you know I’m going, and you know I’m going to have a fun, amazing time.

Now, that being said. I loved working Summerfest as well. It gave me a different perspective of concerts, bands the whole schabang. And I can honestly say, I appreciate the hard work that goes into putting this festival together. It takes a lot of people and of dedication  to create something some many people come to year after year.

I like to think I know a lot about music. I studied it in school, I’ve played piano my whole life, I surround myself with music everyday. That being said, I’m retracting my last statement, because I don’t know that much about music. It’s one thing to understand music theory and to play instrument, but to actually understand what goes behind the scenes , you have so many people that do some many things and much more that goes into creating something people want to listen to. They say in music 95%  of your time is practice and 5% is performance, it’s the same exact thing behind the scenes. And I’m lucky if I understand 5% of it.

Because I don’t know everything about music, I loved going to work everyday to learn something, meeting new people and to engage in something I’m truly passionate for. And here is my thank you to everyone who I worked with at Summerfest. You made me realize that this is something I want to do for the rest of my life, and you if it weren’t for you and my experience, I don’t know what I would do with my life. I want to thank everyone for being my teachers, my mentors and my friends. You gave me a life changing experience that is comparable to my experience in Australia. Basically, pretty amazing.

Here is my big who-ra. Words can’t explain what Summerfest gave me, what the people gave me , what music gave me. I’m so grateful and so humbled by my experience because most people aren’t lucky enough to experience what I had. I’m so honored because I found what makes my heart tick, music makes my heart tick, it makes me want to get up in the morning and do something with my life. It makes me want to do something, share something, learn something and to be a generally good person. Summerfest helped me realize that life without a tick isn’t worth living, and I’m ready to live.

Tiesto

I’m going to be completely honest. This blog is to market the Tiesto concert at Summerfest. I really don’t listen to his music because to be completely honest, I never heard his name before I started working at Summerfest. But if you are into the dubstep ( i love) and techno beat. Go to his concerts, it will be a blast!

Euro 2012

I really don’t have a lot to say about  the tournament. Mostly because I never catch it when it’s on. But what I do know:

The men are HOT! I need to get over to Europe… Fast! Ahora!

And it’s on my bucket list to go to one of those footy games… they seem wilder than a Packer game… that’s saying a lot for those of you who are Packer fans.

I’m sad Poland is out of the tourney  but hey, there is  still a lot of the tournament left. I really don’t have any opinion on it overall, mainly ( like I said) because I don’t get a lot of the Euro games but I do know  I love soccer and European men!

If you don’t know, I’m a huge D-Wade fan so go Heat!… that’s all I have to say about NBA

Norah Jones

It’s not a surprise that everyone likes good music… which is probably why you should listen to Norah Jones  . Now, if you aren’t into the ” girl power, ra ra, Adele genre” she’s not for you, but for others of you who keep an open mind, feel free to listen to her. If you think you haven’t heard any of her music, you have. Her single ” Don’t know why ” made 30 on the top 100 Billboard songs in 2002. In 2003, “the single went on to win three Grammy Awards in 2003 for “Record of the Year”, “Song of the Year”, and “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance”. ” As seen at this website.

If you don’t like her music, well. You’re probably an idiot. But besides that fact, just check out her new single if you don’t like her older stuff.

* Side note- I can be very sarcastic and bias so bear with me on my blog posts*

Not only is Norah Jones actually talented ( she sings, plays piano, plays guitar and she plays saxophone… sounds like someone I know… ME). She also acts and does a bunch of other cool stuff. She crosses genres of music which I think is awesome . For those of you who hate musicians that cross genres ( like pop to country ), shut up, musicians get bored playing the same chords all the time. But most importantly, she has her own style of music. She is her own genre. If I ever were to become a rich and famous musician ( it will never happen) I would want to have my own style of music like Norah.

Tim Tebow

Alright, so as many of you know, Tim Tebow has been in the news a lot especially on ESPN for the past year. Most recently due to his trade to the Jets. Now I’m not going to sit here and say Tim Tebow is awesome, I’m not even saying I’m a fan, just give him a break.

Although this Jimmy Fallon song  is hilarious. Hope you enjoy!

While I don’t think Tim Tebow is the most amazing quarterback there is…maybe he will be one day who knows. But, as of now no, if you look at his  mediocre stats ( they’re average/below average, go look it up yourself if you are that interested) and quite frankly that isn’t a bad thing. Look at Aaron Rodgers, his first year as a starting quarterback for the Packers ( GO PACK GO), his stats were average as well. Now look at him, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. I think with a couple of seasons, I think he could do some damage. But he is just so damn “excited” right now being traded to the jets, I don’t know if he could pull it off.

All jokes aside, apparently, my friends in Florida have met him, and they say that he is the nicest person in the world. ( In Florida, they think he is God). It’s clearly obvious that he is a good person, he prays on the field… go figure. What I don’t understand is why the media makes such a big deal of him for what he does off the field. He clearly means well, but do we have to hound him for praying and being excited all the time? Now if he was beating up dogs like Michael Vick, that is a totally different ball game. But for now ESPN, just shut up about Tim Tebow and let him be second string QB on the Jets. I want to know how his game is on the field, not off the field.

Overall, I’m not a big fan of him, I personally think he is a little overrated. He may be a well rounded ,good guy, but that obviously doesn’t represent his game ( as of now, he could prove me wrong one day). As sport fans, we need to separate professional lives and personal lives of sports players, because it is annoying information I don’t need to know and two who cares.  Tim Tebow, you Tebowie to God is A OK with me! I hope you  are excited to be on the Jets this season!

Timbaland

For those of you who know me or have listened to my radio show, you are fully aware I’ am not that into rap or hip hop. Before you stop reading my blog here are my reasons:

1. It’s just a beat- Most rap is fast talking to a beat. Technically, by my definition, I rap all the time just by how fast I talk.

2. Talk about something else- Rap and hip hop mostly talks about sex, drugs and partying. while most other genres talk about those subject matters, at least those genres do it in a way where it doesn’t make me sick to my stomach.

3. Overall, not musical- When it comes to rap, there isn’t much musicality behind it. It’s mostly a synthesizer that does most of the work.

While I believe most rap is crap, I believe there are still some good artists out there like Timbaland.

According to his website, “Timbaland’s genre breaking has changed popular music today, and he takes pride in his success at staying ahead of the curve with his originality and experimentation. Confident and charismatic, his goal is still to blow the listener’s mind and make them move to the beat.”  Timbland’s website, 2012

Listening to most of his music, I feel that this is an accurate description of his music. He is a producer that has worked with many artists from Missy Elliot to Katy Perry. He has worked with many genres of music and at the same time maintains his own sense of musical style ( which is very hard to do) . Overall, I recommend anyone listening to his music, because it is musically inclined and it is very catchy!

Don’t believe me take a look for yourself !
