Writer’s Block

I’m not quite sure what to write about for this blog. I somewhat have writer’s block. Which is strange because I have a lot on your mind. People that a lot on their mind tend to want to talk about it. It’s funny how the brain works, I guess I just can’t  put my thoughts together tonight. Or this week for that matter.

Actually, now that I think about it, there is something for me to write about. A guy at work was telling me his son wants to create electronic music. AWESOME! He asked for my suggestions on what system to purchase.I told him I wasn’t quite sure, but it sounds like he spent quite a bit of money on it. Any who, my co worker told me that his son is getting frustrated because he doesn’t know how to use his equipment. I offered some help for his son, but I told him, ” I’ll help but he has to practice”. And I think I should take my own advice: if you want to succeed, you have to keep at it.

My Own Drum

There is something truly amazing about music. The way you just stop  and listen to it. The way you sing along in your car. Or sometimes when you listen to it to fall asleep.Whatever the case my be, music (I feel has a purpose for everyone).

I was surfing around on Spotify and I started listen to “My Own Drum”. I really relate to this song because let’s face it, I’m super different. And sometimes I question if I’m way out there or if I’m different enough that makes me stand out. This song helps me bring me back to “myself”. Also, it’s also a pop/rock/jazzy sound that I really dig. She’s got a killer voice too! You should check her out!

I believe Green and Gold

Sooooo if you don’t already know, I’m from Milwaukee. AKA GB nation. AKA I breathe green and gold. So obviously everyone is talking about the Packers vs. Bears game yesterday… well we lost. And Aaron Rodgers had to leave with a shoulder injury ( if I’m not mistaken, I believe he has a broken collarbone). So we have pretty much have every one of our starters out with an injury. With that being said. Laugh it up Bears fans, it must be nice to know that your team can only beat us with your first string  playing our second string.

Good luck trying to get to the Super Bowl.

Lou Reed

“I have never thought of music as a challenge — you always figure the audience is at least as smart as you are,” he wrote. “You do this because you like it, you think what you’re making is beautiful. And if you think it’s beautiful, maybe they think it’s beautiful.” Lou Reed  NY Times

If you don’t know who Lou Reed is. Just know the music world lost an amazing songwriter, musician and  a legend. He paved the way for many musicians when it comes to creativity and sound. But at least he will never be forgotten.

Austin City Limits: Moody Theater

So I was just down in Texas for work.

First off, I have an awesome job. I get to travel and meet a bunch of people. Plus, my coworkers are amazing people.

Anyways, the first night we got there, we rented out ACL Moody Theater for our reception. If you don’t know what Moody Theater is ( so help me if you don’t), it’s one of the most famous theater where they record live music shows. Recently they just moved the theater right to downtown area where we were staying.

That’s besides the point, it was amazing. There were pictures everywhere of people that performed there and the theater itself was just breathtaking. That’s not even the best part. ACL the festival unfortunately was rained out, but the headliner for Sunday ,Atoms for Peace, played at Moody Theater that night. We were able to see a headlining act of ACL the festival! It was amazing and they played an amazing show!!

Long story short: Austin is awesome!

Austin: City of Live Music

I love Nashville, I always have. My senior year of college, I went there on my spring break to hand out my resume… yeah I was a little over ambitious.

Since Nashville, I’ve always kept that thought in my mind of wanting to move down south . Where it is warm and has good music. But my mind set has changed since I went to Austin. Austin is such a cool city when it comes to music. However, I was pretty disappointed by 6th street ( but I did go during the middle of the week). But you would think for a major city, 6th  street would always be happening right?

Regardless of 6th street, Austin has so much to offer when it comes to  the venues and the culture of the city . Most of the cities’ venues are these little run down places ,but they truly have a lot to offer. The best part about it is, the audience loves the music. So everyone is so into it. I love it.

And of course, ACL ( Austin City Limits) is one of the coolest venues I’ve ever seen. If you ever get the chance, go to Austin .

Riot Fest : Chicago

Alright, so besides the fact I had an awesome time in Chicago, I’ll have you know… I took a picture of the city skyline and I put a caption ” Having a drink at the Sears Tower” … yeah I was at the John Hancock building.

… we all have our blonde moments right?

So despite the fact that I don’t know downtown Chicago for anything, I went down to the Windy city for two purposes: to see my friends and to go to Riot Fest.

Riot Fest to say the least definitely had it’s up and downs.

The one thing they did right was their line up: thumbs up Riot Fest, you guys killed it.

However, there are several things I would fix: sound was one of them. When you are playing in an outdoor venue, sound has to carry. It didn’t carry…at.all.

Also, whoever was doing the video for the big screens, I was not impressed. I don’t know maybe it was the “look” they were going for, but I don’t care if Yellowcard says ” let’s make a crowd circle” .I don’t want to see a bunch of yahoos running around in circles. I want to see the band.

Overall, would I go back. Maybe, but if I’m going to spend that kind of money, I’m going to La La instead.

Are You Ready for Some FOOTBALL!?

Oh Yes, it is that time of year. The weather starts to change and on Sundays… Americans stop going to church. Or they go on Saturday night, either way, we dedicate our Sundays to the NFL. Let me tell you, there is nothing better than going to a bar with friends to watch a football game.

The best part of American football, there is no such thing as a “number one” team. Every year it changes. Take for example in Hockey and in Baseball, everyone knows the number one teams. That’s not the case in football. And that my friends is what makes football so excited!

So let me ask you, Are You Ready for Some FOOTBALL!?

What Happened to Originality?

Here’s the reason why I never made it as a musician.

… Well there are many reasons why but the main one is I could never develop a original sound.

For me that’s extremely important… besides writing your own music.

I feel that developing as an artist is like developing your own identity. It allows you to express yourself  in a way that no one else can. And if you can’t do it, then you are just stealing someone else’s sound.

Not to say that there shouldn’t be cover bands, there should be. You know, for bars and such. They are great crowd pleasers. Not to say some are talented, but with enough practice and determination, just about anyone can play a guitar.

However, I understand that when bands are trying to make it, you have to play covers. But at least make it your own. Prime example of this: Capital Cities, Staying Alive.

Keeping An Open Mind

So just like everything you need to keep an open mind… especially when it comes to music.

I heard all about the band Hunx and his Punx. I didn’t know what to expect seeing them in show, all  I knew is they had good music ( Ramones style) so I thought I would go to their show. They had two other openers, Pow Wow and Hunters.

Pow Wow had a sound that I’ve heard before, that garage band type of sound  . That doesn’t mean they were bad but I think they need to work our developing their own “voice” when it comes to their music. Hunters were very good. I was pretty surprised  when they played so well. Kudos to their guitar player because he can wale. The lead singer was very good too ;if you have ever seen the band               ” Kitten” you know what I mean.

Hunx and his Punx came on and I was totally afraid I was going to get stuck in mosh pit. But once I realized how awesome they sounded live, I just joined in.

The lead singer was so out there that him alone would have been awesome if he just stood up there on stage. If you want to check something out that is “totally different” go see Hunx and his Punx. It brings music to a different level and I hope more people appreciate it.
